Since the UK factory was unable to meet the demand, Madras Motors in India took up the responsibility to assemble them. Royal Enfield India made its debut in 1949 with the launch of 350 cc Bullet. The Royal Enfield India was acquired by Eicher Group in March 1994 and its name was changed to Royal Enfield Motors Ltd. Royal Enfield India is now manufactured at Tiruvottiyur in Chennai. Royal Enfield bikes, prized by two wheeler consumers including the army, the police, and the youth have won unrivalled goodwill in the Indian two-wheeler market. When lightweight Japanese bikes with high fuel economy started to arrive, Royal Enfield bikes countered the competition with Enfield Silver Plus Explorer which became an instant hit.
